Description

Woodworking machines - Use and safety is a course aimed at small and medium-sized joinery workshops, larger companies that work in the production of furniture and fittings, and higher education courses that involve the use of woodworking machines.

In order to handle woodworking machines safely, it is important that you have the right knowledge and expertise. You need to know how the machine works, how to check that all the guards, screens and emergency stop features are intact, and if this is the right machine for the job you want to do. It is essential that the operator is sufficiently trained for safe use, a risk assessment is conducted and instructions have been drawn up for each machine. It is also important that employers know what rules apply.

3. Safety and security at work

In order to handle woodworking machines in a safe way, it is important that you have the right knowledge and competence - how the machine works and that all protection, guards and emergency stops are intact and that it is the right machine for the task to be performed. In addition to machine safety, it is also important to know the most common risks in the wood industry such as noise, vibration, ergonomics, dust and chemical risks. The sub-section addresses the basic requirements regarding information on protection and safety. Each company can, based on its work environment responsibility, draw up local safety regulations that you must take note of.

Duration: 5 minutes (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

4. Saw

Rickard introduces to the machine group saws.

Educator: The videos have been created in partnership with Linköping University and the Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry (TMF).
Duration: 2 minutes (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

5. Band saw

The band saw is used in small and medium-sized joinery workshops to rip and crosscut solid wood and to saw curved contours in a workpiece. There are heavy-duty band saws for rip cutting, such as industrial band saws for sawmills with a feed system. Band saw blades can be made quite thin, which creates less loss of material than with circular saws of equivalent capacity.

Educator: The videos have been created in partnership with Linköping University and the Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry (TMF).
Duration: 8 minutes (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

6. Panel saw

The panel saw is in principle built as a circular saw, where the material can be controlled either after an adjustable side stop or via a movable adjusting table. The jigsaw is a very universal saw and belongs to the basic machine equipment for woodworking in small and medium-sized carpentry. The sub-section addresses the basic requirements regarding information on protection and safety. Each company can, based on its work environment responsibility, draw up local safety regulations that you must take note of.

Educator: The videos have been created in partnership with Linköping University and the Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry (TMF).
Duration: 13 minutes (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

7. Pendulum crosscut saw

The pendulum crosscut saw is among the most widely used crosscut saws. The saw blade runs parallel to the table surface and the saw unit is pulled across the workpiece, towards the operator. The pendulum crosscut saw is used as a universal crosscut saw, where the demand for high capacity is not too great and the batch sizes are small.

Educator: The videos have been created in partnership with Linköping University and the Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry (TMF).
Duration: 4 minutes (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

8. Planer

Rickard introduces to the machine group planer.

Educator: The videos have been created in partnership with Linköping University and the Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry (TMF).
Duration: 1 minute (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

9. Thicknesser

A planer is only used for thickness planing or dimension planing. A workpiece to be planed should have a directed side. You turn the directed side down, while the cutter planes the top of the wood.

Duration: 6 minutes (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

10. Jointer

The jointer is used in the carpentry industry to direct timber. This means planing one or two adjacent surfaces so that they are absolutely flat and usually also at a 90 ° angle to each other. Here you plan away cupiness, skew and other defects. The jointer as used in the small or medium-sized carpentry is often fed by hand. If you plan large batches, you can equip the machine with a feeder.

Duration: 9 minutes (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

11. Milling machines

Rickard introduces to the machine group milling machines.

Educator: The videos have been created in partnership with Linköping University and the Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry (TMF).
Duration: 1 minute (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

12. Spindle moulder

The spindle moulder has the largest area of use of all woodworking machines. It can be used for many different tasks, such as milling different types of profiles in both straight and curved workpieces. Virtually all types of milling can be performed, if you use the extensive accessory programs available for the machines. The spindle moulder is used in both the furniture and carpentry industries.

Duration: 10 minutes (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

13. CNC

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) is a method of controlling processing machines using a computer. A CNC machine has a versatile usability and can perform most operations performed in conventional woodworking machines such as milling, drilling and sawing. It can also be programmed to make advanced 3D models and templates. It is a common machine in a modern carpentry.

Duration: 9 minutes (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

14. Drills

Rickard introduces to the machine group drills.

Educator: The videos have been created in partnership with Linköping University and the Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry (TMF).

Educator: The videos have been created in partnership with Linköping University and the Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry (TMF).
Duration: 1 minute (Total duration of the course: 1 hour and 40 minutes)

18. Wide belt sander

The wide belt sander is intended for sanding flat material in larger series. The machine is used for both surface cleaning and leveling. When sanding, an evenly thick layer is sanded away from the entire surface of the workpiece, regardless of whether the thickness varies slightly. When leveling, trim the workpiece evenly in the same way as you plan a workpiece evenly in a planer.

19. Vertical belt sander

The machine is so-called because the sanding belt is arranged vertically in the machine. The endless belt runs over two vertical, rubber-clad rollers, one of which drives the belt. The sanding belt usually oscillates, in which case it may be referred to as an oscillating belt sander. In this case, as well as rotating, the belt has an up-and-down motion.
